The multilateral trading system is stick out from the instability of the parsimony while discriminative agreements keep on flourishing. Nowadays, no growth country is withdrawing from this development. unconstipated if the European Union (EU), which began with the enforcement in 1958 of a customs union, has been putting into deeds preferential agreements for several years, some other developing countries, particularly those in East Asia, did not aid the increase in the prevalence of preferential agreements (Hoekman & Prowse 2005). Nevertheless, in the recent decades, developing economies, such as China, pitch further strengthened this risky development. Because of the distress of the Geneva ministerial convention in 2008, there forget be heightened need for PTAs (Hoekman & Prows e 2005). The issues raised in the recent decade will occur again. The absence of growth in the multilateral stage will be considered as the major justification for preferential agreements and, app arently, this claim is currently more compelling than forwards (Falvey & Reed 2002). With the absence of any possible settlement on the Doha Development Round, the international economy is seasoned once again for a new batch of preferential agreements. However, policymakers should understand the risks that PTAs create for developing countries. Theoretically, preferential agreements rule out countries (Candau & Jean 2006). Liberalisation is PTAs deal and countries make compromises in them, yet these are exclusive to the signatories. Hence, preferential agreements exclude (Evenett 2008). Given this fact, the first most favourable solution would be to aim preferential agreements in general. Countries, without preferential agreements, could either agree in multilateral discussions on liberal isation plans or have unilateral trade regulations (Hoekman et al. 2008). Nowadays, nevertheless, this is not a possible suggestion. All countries would have to concur with the restrictions of PTAs. Hence, the contend at present is to enforce mechanisms that lessen the unfavourable effects of PTAs, in particular on developing countries. This issue will be thoroughly discussed in this paper. Preferential Trade Agreements Favourable or untoward to Developing Countries? Several studies have investigated the effect of the trade preferences of EU on imports from developing nations. Majority have reported favourable outcomes, specifically for the preferences provided to the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) states (Persson and Wilhelmsson 2007), which are aiming for sustainable development and reduction of poverty levels. Evenett (2008) emphasises that the effect of the EU Generalised Scheme of Tariff Preferences (GSP), which guarantees that exporters from developing countries are ch arged with lesser duties, relies on which of the EU GSP agreement that is concerned and that the organisational expenditures related with acquiring level of preferences to that margins of preference of not below 4.5% are non-utilised (Nilsson & Matsson 2009, 5). different scholars, such as Cipollina and Salvati (2008), study the effect of preferences of the EU in the industry of agriculture. Origins of World War II Essay Example for Free

Origins of World state of state of warfare II Essay later the end of the First World war, the statesmen of tout ensemble the major countries felt that such alarming contend must anyhow be averted in frame to ensure international peace, security measure and safety. This is why the fusion of Nations was set up and it was believed that such a international organization would be able to peacefully settle all international disputes and guarantee peace and security in the international sphere. However, the success or failure of the League actually dep stop upon the attitude and activity of its members, in particular the Big Powers. merely, unfortunately, soon it was found that the major Powers were at cross purports. They adopt their foreign policy in their deliver arouse and showed little respect to the principles underlying the League of Nations. Particularly, the dream of three allies Germany, lacquer and Italy was fundamentally different from the ideals of the W estern Powers and Soviet Russia. The Trio (Germany, Japan and Italy) intended to have some share in the Afro-Asian areas which had already been divided among the Western Powers. Thus, it was really a conflict between deuce policies status quo and New Order.Flouting the League The beginning(a) shock to League of Nations was given by Japan. In 1931 Japan violated the League Covenant and the Kellogg Pact by occupying the Chinese filth of Manchuria and setting up a puppet state there. China appealed to the League which condemned this act of infringement and appointed a cathexis under Lord Litton to report. But the fulmination of the League had no effect on Japan who, when the bursters report went against her, withdrew from the League in 1933. The defection of Japan was a serious bulge to the League. But worse was to come when Germany had begun secretly rearm to arm as soon as Hitler came into power. But by and by the failure of the Disarmament Conference, Hitler came into the o pen. In 1935, he repudiated those clauses of the Treaty of Versailles which had imposed limitations on her armed strength, and reintroduced conscription. In the succeeding(prenominal) year he denounced the Locarno Treaty and re-occupied and refortified those zones of the Rhineland, which had been demilitarized by the Treaty of Versailles. The Great Powers were at cross purposes and so zipper was done to resist Hitlers insolent violation of the treaty obligations.Italy under Mussolini pursued an imperial policy and in 1935 made an unprovoked attack upon Abyssinia, a member of the League. The emperor of Abyssinia, Haile Selassie, appealed to the League against the act of light-colored aggression. The League declared Italy to be the aggressor and recommended the application of economic sanctions. The Italian campaign was short, swift and brutal. After some resistance Haile Selassie fled abroad and his capital Addis Ababa was occupied by Italian troops. The King of Italy was proclai med emperor of Abyssinia. Italy withdrew from the League of Nations in 1936.Foreign Policies and International Relations When Hitler came to power he was pledge to recover for Germany the correct of power and importance which she had held before the First World War. He envisaged the formation of a Third Reich or empire which would include all Germans in a new or greater German state. This tortuous the eventual(prenominal) absorption of Germans in a new or greater German state. This involved the ultimate absorption of German-populated regions of Austria, Czechoslovakia and Poland. The dictated treated treaty which Germany had been forced to accept stood in the way of realizing his ambition.Hence Hitler was find out to tear away the Treaty of Versailles which had imposed humiliating restrictions upon Germany, and to make her a power to reckon with. His first significant step in this direction was to withdraw from the Disarmament Conference and to announce a class of conscription . Next he left the League of Nations and openly flouted it by occupying the demilitarized Rhineland. England, France tamely acquiesced in this violation of treaty obligation and so Hitler was encouraged to take larger risks. The Phony War-the events of Europe especially the civil war associated with Spain prove beyond doubt that the shadow of Fascism was falling across Europe, long before the actual clap of World War II. The Spanish civil war which broke out in 1936 was an event of goal importance. It has been aptly called the Little World War because it involved all other powers. The Spanish civil war was a prelude to World War II. In Spain, Italy and Germany is defiance of the principal Collective Security undermined a democratic governing body and Britain and France demonstrated a complete callousness which resulted in the victory of Fascism in Spain. The force of Spanish Civil War foreshadowed that, in future, Fascisms might apply the same tactics on a bigger scale. The smolde ring discontent against monarchy forced Alfonzo XIII of Spain to leave the country in April 1931. Immediately afterwards President Zamora declared Spain to be republic. In Spain the extreme republicans started anti-clerical riots and centrifugal tendencies demonstrated themselves in the attempt to commit autonomy in Catalonia and certain other provinces. The alternative of the Constitutional Assembly on June 28, 1931, showed a expressed landslide for republicanism and in the Cortes the socialists with 117 seats became the largest single group. Spain adopted a radical republican constitution found on German, Soviet and Mexican model with a president and a cabinet responsible to the Cortes. The church building was deprived of its hold over education and civil liberties were guaranteed. Expropriation of the large landed estates proceeded apace. Most of these reforms were carried out by the radical minister Manuel Asana. In the election of 1933 the Asana government fell the Cortes was dominated by a stamp down coalition ministry which did not enforce the laws against landed estates and church. Premier Lerroux tried to establish a pro- fascist government and subdue the radical opposition. President Zamora immediately dissolved the Cortes and ordered fresh election in 1936. In the election of February, 1936, the popular Front parties composed to republicans socialists and communists secured 258 seats and the right parties 215. Asana became the president and Santiago Cascaras Quiroga became the Premier. The government had to face flying opposition from unruly groups like Spanish Phalanx and the Army. The attempt of the Government to steer a put course failed to quell disturbances and the Fascists after careful preparation staged a military revolt on June 18. Military revolts took place in a number of garrison towns in Spain and Spanish Morocco. During the Spanish embroilment Hitler had learnt all he needed about the weakness of the victors of Versailles. He had found that this intervention in Spain had not met with any resistance from the powers and so he was emboldened to embark upon a policy of naked aggression. He turned his attention to Austria whose union with Germany had been expressly prohibitive by the treaty of Versailles. He encouraged national socialist agitation within Austria, bullied the Austrian chancellor into appointing a national socialist minister and forced him to agree to contend foreign affairs as Germanys dictator. Germany and Italy were naturally interested in installing a Fascist power in Spain. The Salazar government of Portugal saw in the radical republic the germs of Bolshevik state and activity helpered and abetted in its downfall.Italy and Germany saw in the rise of a Fascist Spain great advantage to their cause. ideologically the adherence of Spain would help the spread of Fascism and materially it would weaken France increase the possibility of exploiting Spanish mines and raw materials in a future war aga inst democracies and strengthen the hold of Italy in the Western Mediterranean. The Labor opposition powerfully urged help to Government legally constituted. But Stanley Baldwin and even Churchill, who opposed the Nazi aggression on any other issue, felt that nothing could be done for helping the Republicans. The behavior of the French government during this breaker point was an enigma to the rest of the world. The Republic was in dire need of more mail but perverse to all expectations the French Popular Front government prohibited all export of arms to Spain on July 25, 1936. This was a violation of an earlier agreement whereby France had undertaken to supply arms to Spain. The British government was steering a middle course. It was unwilling to alienate Italy whose friendship was earnestly sought for as a counterpoise to Nazi Germany. When Blum suggested the formation of a Committee of Non-Intervention it was welcomed. This committee was formed in August 1936, with twenty seven nations. The purpose of the committee was to enforce the agreement reached among powers to hold a ring around Spanish Civil War so that others might not be involved in it and to prevent any military aid on either side. The Fascists power had no intention of letting down Franco and while Britain and France meticulously utilize the principle of non-intervention to prohibit export arms to Spain, the rebels received planes, munitions and men from Germany, Italy and Portugal. Thus while the legitimate government of Spain was deprived of all aids from outside and ran short of the sinews of war, in the name of non-intervention, the rebels secured active foreign aid. The League Council passed a resolution in May 1936, and directed all other states not to intervene in the Spanish Civil war. The Fascist powers were immediately free to act as they liked Spain. Men and arms poured to the rebels while the legitimate government suffered from lack of supply due to the intervention of the Committe e of Non-intervention.The dubious social occasion of the Non-Intervention Committee merely provided a shield for Fascist aggression in Spain. Italy and Germany were allowed to strike another blow at the democracies. Next in 1938 he poured troops into Austria and incorporated it in Nazi empire. Till now Italy had been the most effective protector of Austria, but she was now busy with her own acts of aggression in Abyssinia and so did not interfere with a fellow aggressor. The ease with which Hitler had annexed Austria whetted his territorial appetite and encouraged him to further acts of aggression (Paul 59).Czechoslovakia an artificial creation of the peace treaties contained a considerable element of German population. Hitler first began a war of nerves by a bombardment of accusation, abuse and menaces and then declared that his patience had been exhausted. He imperatively demanded that Sudetenland which was predominantly inhabited by the Germans should be ceded to the Reich and that he would take it by force it peaceful marrow failed. At that time, Chamberlain, the British Prime Minister, tried to persuade Hitler to resist himself.Soon the Munich Pact was signed by the Big Powers and they intended to satisfy Hitler by giving him Sudetenland of Czech-Slovakia. As Fleming observes, Nations have often being conquered by enemies, but never before a proud and worthy people been bludgeoned into submission by its own allies (Fleming 56). Thus, Hitler was encouraged to proceed towards Poland and soon the crisis further aggravated. Original of world war II- having taken Memel Hitler began to get on plans for an assault upon Poland. He demanded the Danzig should be incorporated in the German Reich and the Polish Corridor should be ceded to Germany. This was the last straw. Chamberlain gave up his policy of appeasement and announced that in the event of an aggression on Poland, Great Britain would come to the fork up the Polish government. Thus, when Germany attack ed Poland, the Second World War broke out, because Britain and France now realized that the policy of appeasement ended in a fiasco (Ray 112). So long, Hitler had intended to neutralize Britain and had signed a non-aggression Pact with Soviet Russia. Naturally, he thought that now he would find little resistance against his plan of occupying the Polish Corridor. In fact, he desired to localize the the Polish war on which he had set his heart. To isolate Poland, Hitler now attempted to win Great Britain. In a message, delivered verbally to the British Ambassador, Sir Neville Henderson, he expressed his desire to solve in his own way the question of Polish Corridor and Danzig, but at the same time, he pledged himself for the continuance of British Empire. He even expressed his readiness to render German assistance, if required, to Britain. On August 28, the British Government proposed direct negotiation for resolving the differences between Poland and Germany.Hitler in reply demanded that capital of Poland should send an emissary with full powers to negotiate with German government. The proposal had no chance of being judge and the British government in reply sent a counter-proposal of a restoration of normal contact. It was presented by Neville Henderson to Foreign Minister Ribbentrop on August 30. On September 1, the German army marched into the Polish territory to execute Case White. A last-minute effort for peace by Mussolini failed and the Anglo-French Powers declared war on Germany on September 3, 1939. Conclusion Thus, the outbreak of the Second World War was not at all a surprising affair. In fact, the Big Powers pursued different policies in self interest and when their unity was badly needed, they differed with from one another. Soviet Russia alone emphasized on the policy of a unite stand, because it believed in the doctrine peace is indivisible. However, the capitalist countries like Britain and France talked with it for common safety but, in realit y, they adopted a half-hearted policy. While France was directly involved in a rivalry with Germany, Britain intended to keep a safe distance. As Winston Churchill, the former British Prime Minister, held Clemenceau or Poincare would have left Mr.Baldwin no natural selection (Churchill 154). In other words, France intended to fight against German militarism, but Chamberlain was not ready to join it. the States was outside the league at that time, and hence, it had no responsibility to prevent the Global War. The Spanish Civil War and the weakness of France actually encouraged Hitler to continue his aggressive policy (Fleming, The Origin of the Cold War, 62). Moreover, Italy and Japan were disposition for some territorial advantage against the wishes of the Western Powers. In such circumstances, a Global War was the barely inevitability.

The Effects of Space Exploration on Modern Society Essay Example for Free

The Effects of spot Exploration on Modern Society EssaySpace exploration has been increasing greatly in the last 50 years. It has allowed us to understand the greatness of the universe and the eternal possibilities it offers us. Our planet, Earth, is inhabited by approximately 6 billion humans. This is well over our natural c commensurate carrying capacity (the marrow of resources there atomic number 18 to sustain our population) but with techniques such as farming, we ease up manipulated our resources to provide us with affluent food, but alternate solutions are needed. The Cold War was when the space exploration significantly advanced, with the political aspiration between U. S.A and the U.S.S.R., where the two nations invested highly on technologies to see who could win the space-race. Artificial satellites, a man do device that areas around Earth or another(prenominal) planets, came a coherent at about 1951, when the Russians launched Sputnik 1 into orbit around Ear th. Since then, satellites nourish developed technologically and now they are so widely used, that almost everyones benefiting from them in everyday life. by space exploration, a lot has been learnt about Earth and space. When the Hubble Space Telescope was amply operational in 1993, it allowed us to observe our galaxy in ways that were im feasible from Earth. Orbiting observatories such as the Advanced X-Ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF) and the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) also contributed to the study of the stars, galaxies and the structure of the universe. These have all brought back images of previously un enjoyn galaxies and stars, and also have increased our awareness of black holes. several(prenominal) probes have been sent out from Earth, and collected development about the atmospheres of the planets in our solar system. Scientist and environmentalists have learnt a great deal about our planet. With the help of satellites, they can now easily find facts about defore station, pollution, global warming and climates, giving mankind a broader understanding of our own planet.Space exploration has brought countless benefits to the tidy sum. Through the explore of NASA , space exploration has indirectly provided us with Compact discs, special UV protection suits for people who can not be exposed to the sun and metal alloys which are now used for aeroplanes, sports equipment and trains. I believe that satellites have been the greatest compensation from the specie invested in space exploration. There are presently over 2,200operational satellites orbiting the Earth, most of them, profiting the people. There are three types of satellites GPSs, reconnaissance mission and Telecommunication satellites. Reconnaissance satellites are the ones that orbit most closely to the Earth, and are equipped with high resolution cameras. More sophisticated Reconnaissance satellites are the spy cameras, which can capture full motion pictures of the Earth. These types of satellites are also nearlytimes structured with special sensors for heat, infra-red and ultra-violet these have very beneficial utilities such as for meteorology. Meteorological satellites have given us the ability to predict weather like never before. Not only is it used for people to know the future temperatures, its also very useful for navigational purposes for ships and aeroplanes, whos pilots can now travel through a safer routes. Another fantastic technology that satellites have given us is the GPS (Global Positioning System). The GPS provides the user with accurate information of their latitude, longitude and velocity, and it was initially designed for military use, but the commerce has found various new applications for the GPS.If a car fitted with the GPS was to be stolen, the company can constantly monitor the location of the vehicle. Some police cars now have GPSs, so in future emergencies, the station would be able to contact the closest police vehicle via radio. Telecommunication satellites communicate by sending each other communicational signals, and therefore being able to send them to any part of the world. Mobile phones, modern television and the internet all depend on telecommunication satellites.Third world countries very probably go out oppose space exploration. The rich, who can invest, will only make more money exploring space, increasing the bridge between the poor while the money could be invested on the development of our own Earth. Other who oppose space exploration could argue that the possible dangers that the unexplored space holds for us, could lead to deaths and losses if not approached with caution. The U.S. governments spends billions of Dollars annually on space exploration. While some of it is a true necessity (i.e. satellites maintenance), I believe that it is mostly avoidable. The money spent on research of other planets could be redirected the problems in our world. Whygo searching for more space, when there is pl enty to do here? However, I believe that just the possible future advantages outweigh the drawbacks. Space exploration is a promising solution to the upcoming threat of over population. With the estimated figure of 9 billion humans on man by the next three decades, mankind needs to find additional resources elsewhere. On the other hand, people may believe that controlling the population is a more viable solution than act to support its increasing numbers. Space exploration has also provided us with technologies that save lives, such as the divination of natural hazards such as hurricanes and typhoons.Space exploration has already modified our life styles, simplifying complicated tasks and automating long tedious work. I believe that space exploration should definitely continue. Space holds danger, asteroids have hit earth before, and they will again. Without the ability to reach out across space, the chance to save ourselves might not exist. Space allows us to expand and succeed. Thats one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.

Sexuality is a very touchy issue for many state but it is something that often needs to be addressed. The issue of sexuality is a major concern for many, since mass tend to have different sexual orientations. This family remains open to the issue of sexuality and eve ryone has the freedom to elect or decide the path he wants to follow. However, this has to fall in line with the family values which they hold dearly. Chap 2 Homework Essay1. Performance, Reliability and responsiveness, Serviceability, and Aesthetics are all significant dimensions of prime(prenominal) in fast food restaurants. First of all, the performance and serviceability of a fast food restaurant is actually important because like the name states fast food is scarcely that fastSo in order for it to be considered a fast food establishment it if very important to keep up the flow of traffic in and out of the campaign thru and the dining board in a timely and efficient manner without compromising the quality of the food. The second thing is to admit reliability and responsive services for a fast food restaurant such as node service. If customer service is poor and the food isnt prepared properly or your orders keep acquiring messed up then by their bad experience word of mouth will spread and it could drive people a representation from the establishment and they will begin searching for other places to eat.The last fo rm of quality I believe a fast food restaurant should have is Aesthetics or the way the restaurant looks and smells. For example, we went to Golden Corral a considerable time ago and it literally smelled like feces. It do eating there hard to do because it stunk so badly. Come to find out they had a sewer leak and had to get it repaired but my family and I stopped going there for quite a long time until it was fixed. It is very important that the facility is clean without debris and trash around it and that even the at bottom facility is kept up with clean bathrooms, tables wiped and floors mopped. In order to exceed my expectations I would expect to channelise thru the drive thru and hear a happy or courteous person over the speaker thats not rushing me to make a decision, acknowledgment when I pay and prompt service when I reach the food windowpane.I would also expect that my food be prepared like I asked and that there be condiments or utensils necessary for me to eat or drin k my food in the bag. 2. superstar way that productivity could have been improved is when Jon (the cashier) needed more batteries for his headset, he could have asked someone else or his manager in the kitchen to obtain them for him so that he could have remained at the window with the customer to uplift his payment. Dance - Girl Essay Example for Free

leaping Girl EssayDance, Girl, Dance is a film from the authorised Hollywood period that presents a complicated training when viewed through a feminist lens. The 1940 film was order by Dorothy Arzner, one of the most notable female directors and the only prominent woman in Hollywood at that time. Arzner presents her audience with an array of female partings, the main characters being Judy Obrien and Bubbles/Tiger Lily White. Judy is a commit dancer, honing her talents as a ballerina. Bubbles, on the other hand, uses her livelinesss and sexuality to land jobs as a burlesque dancer. Dance, Girl, Dance reveals these characters experience in a dance troupe with several other girls. When the troupe disbands, Bubbles comes to offer Judy a humiliating job as her stooge. As tensions rise, the two eventually come to blows, quite literally, when both return for the same man, Jimmy Harris. Through their relationship with each other and with men, a dynamic is defined that gives app reciation into the power of the male gaze and sexual politics, not only in the film but also in society at large in the context of 1930s America. This can be seen in the analysis of a particular scene near the beginning of the film. Judy and one of her way of lifemates, sortie, argon preparing for bed afterward their performance at the wickednessclub in the opening scene. Bubbles, their third roommate, arrives at home after a disappointing outing with Jimmy. This scene specifically highlights the contrast between the personalities of Judy and Bubbles, and speaks to the many ways female characters argon coded establish on their sexuality and appearance. The analysis of the scene begins at the moment Bubbles enters the room. She comes into the frame through the entre in a mediocre shot. It is important to note her costume, as it speaks to her character. She is wearing makeup, jewelry, a fox fur stole around her shoulders and a feathered hat. One may get the impression that she is trying to look as glamorous or ostentatious as possible on her limited budget. At this point, Bubbles has already been partly established as a brash woman who does not shy away from her major power to attract men. This can be contrasted with Judys costume during this scene, modest button-up pajamas. The scene continues as Bubbles enters the tiny apartment. She turns on the light, when Judy whispers that Sally is asleep from off camera. Bubbles leaves the light on, looks d proclaim at Sally in the bed, and proceeds to clamorously close the door while muttering So, what? As she delivers her dialogue, the camera follows her as she walks to her bed, panning over to include Judy in a two shot. One key element in this simple interaction is the difference of place toward female solidarity between Bubbles and Judy. Judy obviously c bes to not disturb Sally, while Bubbles seems disappointed and only matched with her own problems at this point. Then, the camera cuts to a close shot of Sally lying in bed, smiling and intelligibly awake. She then closes her eyes and continues to try and sleep, rendering her unimportant to the rest of the scene. The next cut brings us stomach to a long, two shot of Bubbles and Judy as they discuss what happened to Bubbles that evening. Bubbles is explaining how she had gone out with Jimmy, but he on the spur of the moment left her at the bar after giving her a little stuffed bull. In this shot, Bubbles is in the foreground, a little closer to the camera than Judy, making her appear slightly larger. This could be interpreted as signifying her genial dominance over Judy, and the fact that she stole Jimmy from Judy earlier that evening. Bubbles dismissively tosses the bull onto a chair in front of Judy. Judy picks it up, stating Its cute. Bubbles tells her that she can have it. The audience is clearly meant to get the impression that the token of the night has no significance to Bubbles, and she is merely disappointed that she could not add Jimmy to her list of men to get on on her occasionally. The camera stays stationary as Bubble walks to the maskingground of the shot and sits on her bed. Judy lightly places the bull backward on the chair, already showing signs of her eventual fetishization of the bull and Jimmy. Then, she continues to bend and stretch her legs, as Bubbles pouts behind her. It is interesting to point out that as Judy resumes her exercises, she has gained the high ground of the shot. The reminder of her status as a dancer, a more artful and talented dancer than Bubbles, means she is the larger, more significant character in the frame now.The focus has moved from Bubbles proficiency as a female spectacle, completely at home under the male gaze, to Judys proficiency as a ballerina, with no real concern for superficial male attention. Then, this is reinforced when there is a cut to a strong point shot of Bubbles, expression at Judy. The camera follows Bubbles line of sight and there is a quick cut to a medium shot of Judy, then it reverses back to the shot of Bubbles on her bed, shaking her bearing. She says, Ill say one involvement for you, Pavlova. Youve certainly got ambition, even if its dumb. As she says this, Judys foot briefly enters from the side of the frame as she kicks her leg. Once again, Bubbles is coded as having no passion for her craft as a dancer, seeing it as a means to an end of attracting men and/or making money, while Judy genuinely loves to dance. One way of reading the film is through the suggestion that Judys ballet is high art, while Bubbles burlesque is low art. In the world of the Dance, Girl, Dance, women utilizing their sexuality for physical and financial gratification given by men is deemed less precious than artistic expression. What follows is a short series of counter shots between the two, as Bubbles ponders how she will get back to New York, going through her list of male suitors to find a solution to her dilemma. On a surface level, this shows that Bubbles needs men to get where she is going, whether it is for a spark to New York or a trip to stardom as they buy tickets to her shows later in the film. The scene comes to a close as Bubbles decides on Sam, the travelling salesman that is sweet on her. As this line is delivered, there is a quick cut to Judy whipping her head around to look back at Bubbles. Judy has an expression on her face that is hard to describe, but it gets crosswise the fact that her reality is very different from that of Bubbles. Judy goes on to ask if there will be room for Sally, as the camera tracks Bubbles while she walks to the bathroom. As the camera stops tracking, it stops in a medium shot of Bubbles as she eventually replies, All right, she can go, but dont blame me.That goofs got more arms than an octopus. There is a cut to a close shot of Sally in bed with a wide-eyed, nervous expression as she quickly lifts up her head and plops back down. Like Judy, her reality is very dif ferent from the reality of the dynamic Bubbles, and the possibility of encountering a man from that reality seems to frighten her. After the last cut of the scene, it ends on a medium shot of Judy picking up the stuffed bull once again and smiling at it fondly. This emphasizes the fact Judy is not asexual and clearly is maturation feelings for Jimmy. Although, Judy seems to have a more deep, emotional connection to Jimmy than Bubbles has for her various men. Judy only became interested in Jimmy after he helped the girls at the nightclub and talked with her earlier in the film. Her interest is not based solely on what he can provide to her. The differences in costume, behavior and motivation between Bubbles and Judy are relevant to a larger scope of the film involving sex and gender politics. For all of the above reasons ground in the formal elements of the films visual and narrative composition, Bubbles is coded as superficial, purely physical and vapid. On the other hand, Judy is g iven much more value and depth. While Bubbles goes on to find success by exploiting her good looks, Judy is the winner in the end, when she lands her position in the ballet company and achieves her dreams. In this way, the film is move a message that female self-worth is not derived from male approval or reaffirming of beauty, but from accomplishment of what are considered to be more substantial goals.
